Two police officers were hospitalised after being shot by a 82-year-old retiree on Saturday 20 June in Nogent-le-Rotrou, Eure-et-Loir. The Chartres prosecutor's office announced the opening of a judicial investigation for attempted wilful homicide against persons holding public authority.
The alert was raised at around 19:00 by the suspect's wife. Concerned for her husband, she contacted the police after he left their house with a firearm, ranting confused remarks about a revolution and the removal of the President of the Republic.
The officers intervened on site and located the octogenarian in his garden. Despite an attempt at discussion, the man fired three rounds in the direction of the forces of order. Two of them were struck in the lower limbs and transported to hospital facilities in Chartres and Clamart. Their lives were not in danger.
The police officers then made use of their weapons. The elderly man, possibly struck in a hand, barricaded himself in the basement of his residence. His arrest took place shortly before 23:00, without incident, with the assistance of the GIGN.
A former shopkeeper in the town, the suspect had never been previously convicted. He was taken to a hospital centre in the Sarthe for treatment. A psychiatric assessment is to be carried out soon.
Two separate procedures were opened by the prosecutor's office. The first concerns the gunshots fired by the suspect and was assigned to the local investigative brigade. The second concerns the police officers' fire that may have injured him and falls under the Orleans investigative section.
