A police operation conducted as part of an investigation into drug trafficking led to the discovery of a painting by Pablo Picasso in a residence in the Paris suburbs, the Créteil prosecutor's office announced on Saturday.
"This discovery was made during a search carried out as part of an investigation into drug trafficking," the prosecutor's office clarified, adding that it has opened proceedings for theft and handling of stolen goods.
According to Le Parisien, which revealed the case, investigators intervened on Monday in Champigny-sur-Marne, a town located east of the capital. In addition to the painting, they seized cannabis resin, high-end clothing items and a sum of cash amounting to several thousand euros.
The prosecutor's office confirmed the authenticity of the work as being by the hand of the Spanish painter, though it did not specify its title.
On Friday, four people were brought before a court for an immediate hearing in connection with this case.
