Authentic Picasso seized in drug raid near Paris
French investigators recovered a genuine canvas by Pablo Picasso while searching a residence as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. The operation took place last Monday in Champigny-sur-Marne, east of Paris, according to information from the newspaper Le Parisien.
Police were initially searching for narcotics in this house located in the Paris suburbs. In addition to the painting by the famous Spanish artist, officers also seized cannabis in resin form, luxury clothing and several thousand euros in cash, according to the same source.
The painting recovered is believed to be a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, one of Picasso's most well-known companions. Its market value is estimated at between 12 and 15 million euros, according to Le Parisien.
The Créteil prosecutor's office, which is coordinating the investigation, confirmed the authenticity of the work. The office also opened an investigation into theft and handling of stolen goods. Four individuals were referred for immediate appearance last Friday.
The authorities did not specify the exact identity of the painting nor the circumstances of its initial disappearance.
