CRÉTEIL, France — A police operation aimed at uncovering narcotics at a house in the Paris suburbs has resulted in the discovery of a painting attributed to Pablo Picasso, prosecutors announced on Saturday.
"This discovery was made during a search carried out as part of proceedings relating to the illicit trade in controlled substances," the public prosecutor's office in Créteil, to the south-east of the capital, clarified.
Investigators also opened a file for theft and receiving of stolen goods, the same source added.
On Friday, four individuals were brought before the court for an immediate appearance hearing linked to this case, according to details from the prosecutor's office.
The newspaper Le Parisien, which revealed the information first, indicated that the search had been conducted on Monday by investigators in Champigny-sur-Marne, a commune located to the east of Paris.
In addition to the canvas by the Spanish master, officers also seized cannabis resin, luxury brand clothing and several thousand euros in cash, the newspaper reported.
The Créteil prosecutor's office confirmed the authenticity of the work as being from the hand of the Spanish painter, without however disclosing the title or exact description of the canvas.
