According to 20minutes.fr, the driver who struck a crowd Friday evening in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe, was remanded in custody. The information was confirmed Sunday by Alexandra Onfray, Deputy Prosecutor of Pointe-à-Pitre.
The 45-year-old man, tested positive for alcohol and cannabis, struck a group of people waiting in front of a food truck. Approximately 300 people were gathered for Christmas festivities organised by the municipality.
"He struck approximately 30 people, but 19 were injured with incapacities of less than and greater than 3 months," the prosecutor's office clarified. Among the injured were seven children, including a child around ten years old who was seriously hurt.
The incident triggered a strong wave of emotion in the archipelago and prompted reactions from numerous public figures. The education authority announced via press release that a listening cell would be established in the schools concerned, which the rector will visit on Monday.
