Prefectoral curfew after a night of violence in Pointe-à-Pitre and Les Abymes

Following urban violence that occurred during the night of Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 October 2026, the prefect of Guadeloupe Thierry Devimeux issued a decree prohibiting minors from circulating without adult supervision in two municipalities, according to a1ere.franceinfo.fr.

The decree covers the municipality of Pointe-à-Pitre and that of Les Abymes. It is in force from 20:00 on Sunday evening until 06:00 on Monday morning. No person under 18 years of age may be found on a public road during these hours without being accompanied by a parent or an adult exercising parental authority.

"Under this decree, minors not accompanied by a parent or an adult exercising parental authority who are found in the public space of these two municipalities by law enforcement may be apprehended and handed over to those who are civilly responsible for them," the official text states.

Offenders may be subject to educational assistance measures by the public prosecutor's office.

The Palais d'Orléans in Basse-Terre describes this decision as a protective measure, aimed at preventing minors from finding themselves "at the sites of urban violence or in proximity to them". The disturbances of the previous night resulted in three injuries among law enforcement officers.

The State services are also calling on parents to exercise their responsibilities by ensuring that their children are not outside during the hours covered by the decree.
