17-year-old sixth-form student shot dead in Pointe-à-Pitre, third violent death in Guadeloupe since January
A 17-year-old sixth-form student was shot dead Wednesday evening in Pointe-à-Pitre. Since the start of the year, three violent deaths have been recorded in Guadeloupe.

A 17-year-old adolescent was shot dead during the night of Wednesday 7 January 2026 in Pointe-à-Pitre, according to la1ere.franceinfo.fr. The victim was a pupil at the Chevalier de Saint-George comprehensive sixth-form college in Les Abymes, according to a statement from the Guadeloupe education authority.
Rector Gabriele Fioni extended his condolences to the adolescent's family and those close to him, expressing his "deep distress" at a death that occurred "in particularly tragic circumstances". A listening service will be set up within the establishment to provide psychological support to pupils and staff.
A second shooting broke out the same evening in the Henry IV district, known as "Washington", not far from the first incident, also in Pointe-à-Pitre. Gunshots were also heard in Petit-Bourg, in the Fleur de Canne residential area, where a minor was seriously injured.
These events come three days after the murder of Anthony Sarazin, 18 years old, shot dead on Sunday 4 January at the entrance of rue Frébault in Pointe-à-Pitre, during a carnival procession. Sarazin lived in Petit-Bourg, the district where gunfire on Wednesday evening injured another minor.
Last Saturday, a 26-year-old man had also succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal wound to the abdomen, during an assault involving a gold chain.
Since 1 January 2026, Guadeloupe has already recorded three violent deaths. The recurrence of shootings illustrates, according to la1ere.franceinfo.fr, increased circulation of firearms in the archipelago, where criminals are no longer hesitant to use them.
