A 16-year-old adolescent has been charged with murder and remanded in provisional custody at Baie-Mahault penitentiary following the death of a 22-year-old man shot on 18 March in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor's office, according to letelegramme.fr.
The suspect, placed in police custody on Monday, "was brought before the investigating judge and charged with murder before being remanded in provisional custody" the following day, stated Caroline Calbo, prosecutor of the Republic of Pointe-à-Pitre, in a statement. She clarified to Agence France-Presse that the minor "was over 16 years old at the time of the facts" and that the "motive for the murder is under investigation".
The investigation was entrusted to the research section of the Pointe-à-Pitre gendarmerie. According to the prosecutor, "technical investigations made it possible to identify suspects". In total, three people "suspected of being armed" were apprehended during the operation.
During the searches, "a Taurus-brand 9mm calibre hand weapon with ammunition, suspected of having been used to commit the murder" was seized from one of the searched addresses, Caroline Calbo stated.
The facts date back to 18 March, in the early evening. The victim, a 22-year-old man, was found "lying face down in his blood" in a tourist area of the municipality of Sainte-Anne. A witness had heard gunshots and alerted the gendarmes, but emergency services were unable to revive the victim.
