Human bones, wrapped in plastic, papers and sheets, were discovered last Friday morning in a basement storeroom of a single-family home on Ithaki Street in Marathon, according to reports by In.gr. The findings are believed to belong to an elderly woman who had disappeared from her family environment approximately ten years ago.
A 68-year-old daughter of the elderly woman and her grandson are expected to be referred to the judicial authorities. The two are accused of failure to report the discovery of a body, whilst an investigation is being conducted into the possibility of fraud against the state: the woman's death had not been reported and her pension is believed to have been collected for nearly a decade.
How the case was uncovered
The first thread of the case emerged approximately two weeks earlier, when another granddaughter of the elderly woman — the daughter of the 68-year-old and sister of the second arrested person — reported to the authorities that she had lost all contact with her grandmother for ten years and expressed suspicions about her fate.
Police officers searched the elderly woman's details in the EFKA database and found that her death had not been recorded. Her bank account remained active and showed transactions up to August 2026, according to reports.
Searches at the house
During the investigations, the 68-year-old is reported to have admitted that her mother had died approximately ten years ago and that she had not reported her death in order to continue receiving the pension. She initially indicated the house courtyard as the place of burial. Teams with specialised machinery and excavators searched the entire garden without finding anything.
The searches were subsequently extended to the interior of the residence, where the bones were ultimately found in the basement storeroom. A specialist anthropologist was called to the scene to examine the findings.
What the authorities are investigating
Laboratory examinations are expected to confirm whether the bones belong to the elderly woman, who, if she were alive today, would be approximately 90 years old. In parallel, the time and causes of death will be investigated to the extent that is feasible. So far all possibilities remain open.
The elderly woman's daughter claims that her mother died from natural causes due to advanced age. The grandson denies knowing what had happened, claiming that his mother did not tell him where his grandmother was.
Following completion of the financial audit and release of the laboratory examination results, a separate investigation file is expected to be opened for fraud against the state. The authorities will determine the total amount withdrawn from the elderly woman's account after her reported time of death.
In parallel, investigations are being conducted into the relationships between family members, as well as any financial or inheritance disputes that may be connected to the report.
