Four police officers involved in the murder of Kyriaki Griva are being referred to trial before the Mixed Jury Court, according to reporting by megatv.com. The duty officer, the supervisor, the guard and the call operator of the Immediate Action unit are accused of the serious offence of culpable homicide by omission.
The 28-year-old was murdered on 1 April 2024 outside the Agioi Anargyroi police station by her former partner. She had called 100 and come to the station seeking protection as the perpetrator was pursuing her.
The ruling of the Misdemeanour Court Council, which adopted the corresponding prosecution proposal, attributes specific omissions to the four police officers. According to the reasoning, the guard failed to act to prevent the attack, did not protect Kyriaki and did not take steps to disarm the perpetrator.
The supervisor did not guide the young duty officer, did not inform the 28-year-old of her rights and did not order the arrest of the victim's former partner. The duty officer, for her part, did not arrange for a patrol car to be made available, whilst she requested a deposit from Kyriaki for the submission of a complaint.
The call operator did not report the domestic violence incident as urgent, did not record the details of the former partner and did not forward the incident card as high priority.
Two and a half years after the murder, the ruling finds that the four police officers had a particular legal obligation and left a person in need unassisted whom they were required to protect. The 40-year-old former partner of Kyriaki has already been found guilty of the murder, without mitigating circumstances.
