Dendias's order for the standby placement of the officer who set fire in Glyfada
Defence Minister Nikos Dendias requested the immediate standby placement of a Hellenic Navy officer arrested in Lefkada, according to sources cited by Newsit.gr. The 45-year-old is accused of two arson attacks against the properties of former partners in Glyfada.
Dendias asked the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Dimitrios Choups, to immediately initiate the prescribed procedures for the officer's standby placement. The attacks occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, 30 October 2026.
Two attacks in 15 minutes
According to investigation findings, the 45-year-old carried out two arson attacks within a period of just 15 minutes. He first broke into the apartment of his 36-year-old former partner using her keys and set fire to the interior using petrol from a 10-litre jerry can.
Security camera footage captures him wearing a mask and hood, and attempting to cover the camera lens with a cloth. He then proceeded to Nymphaion Street, where he set fire to a car belonging to another former partner, as well as to an adjacent vehicle belonging to a neighbour. The owner of the second car stated that the front of his vehicle was completely destroyed.
"He told me he would kill you"
The 36-year-old, speaking to Live News, described how she learned of the arson whilst at work. "I opened the camera app and saw that I couldn't see any image. I called my sister who lives upstairs and she told me: 'He set us on fire'", she said.
"The police came to my workplace to get me. I didn't expect that what I saw on television, heard from others, would happen to me. He told me he would kill you. It happened twice during October", she alleged.
History of domestic violence
The 45-year-old is understood to have come to the attention of authorities in the past over domestic violence incidents. The father of the 36-year-old told Newsit.gr that the accused, despite their separation, continued to live in his daughter's house under the pretext that he needed time to find new accommodation. During October, the 45-year-old is reported to have seized his daughter and told her: "I will kill you".
