Attack on KNE members in Zarouchleika, Patras – two hospitalised with fractures

Two seriously injured victims are the toll of a violent attack that occurred on Tuesday evening in the Neapolis Zarouchleika area of Patras, according to In.gr. The victims were students and members of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE).

The two most seriously injured were struck in the head and other parts of the body. One suffered a broken lower jaw and the other a broken nose. Both were taken to "Agios Andreas" Hospital, where they were being treated until the early morning hours.

Days of intimidation preceded the attack

According to information reported by 902.gr, for several days before the attack, unknown individuals had been threatening and verbally assaulting a female student from the 8th Lyceum of Patras, a member of the KNE and the Coordinating Committee of Students in Patras, in a small square outside her residence during evening hours.

On Tuesday evening, students attempted to ask the individuals gathered beneath her house to stop their behaviour. They then came under attack from a group of approximately 40 people.

Helmets, knuckledusters and calls for knives

The attackers used helmets and knuckledusters, whilst shouts of "get the knives" were heard. Some arrived at the scene in cars that they did not even turn off their engines, struck the victims and immediately left the area.

Complaint from KKE and KNE Achaia

The Achaia organisations of the KKE and KNE issued a statement immediately, characterising the attack as "organised fascist – criminal" and emphasising that it was carried out with "thugs, knuckledusters and knives".

"Last night's attack was carried out following successive attempts at intimidation, even outside her house in previous days," the statement read. The organisations characterised these actions as an attempt to terrorise the student movement and called on "the people of Patras and the city's organisations to isolate fascists in every school, university and neighbourhood".
