Serres: 36-year-old brought before prosecutor over father's death

36-year-old arrested for alleged manslaughter of father in Serres

The 36-year-old son of the 67-year-old found dead at his home in Serres is being brought before a prosecutor and examining magistrate, according to Ethnos. The case was transformed from a natural death case into a criminal manslaughter investigation following the findings of the forensic examination.

Timeline

The 67-year-old was found dead on Saturday afternoon by his son, who, although living elsewhere, visited him regularly. The man was taken to Serres General Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. Police authorities were called to the house, as the premises were found in disarray.

Initially the death was attributed to pathological causes. Days later, however, the forensic examination's findings overturned this assessment. According to information that has come to light, the 67-year-old had multiple injuries to the abdominal area from a blunt object — a hammer or baseball bat is suggested as a possible implement. These injuries are said to have caused internal bleeding that led to his death.

Contradictions and camera footage

The 36-year-old is said to have been the last person to see his father alive. The authorities found contradictions both in the suspect's initial and subsequent statements, a fact which strengthened suspicions against him. He denies any involvement in his father's death.

As part of the investigation, police officers collected video footage from security cameras located behind Serres' Public Central Library. This footage shows only him entering the house. The 36-year-old had stated that he visited his father on Thursday — two days before the body was found — around 2 a.m. Neighbours, however, are said to have stated that they had seen him entering the residence at a different time.

History of family tensions

Police are also examining the history of the relationship between father and son. Neighbours reported that they frequently heard arguments between them. The 36-year-old had admitted to the ERT that there were tensions, while he also revealed that his father had reported him in the past for domestic violence. This information was included in the authorities' broader assessment within the framework of the criminal investigation.
