Students at Chortiati Gymnasium in Thessaloniki created and distributed fake photographs with indecent content depicting five classmates, using artificial intelligence tools, according to Dikastiko.gr. The images were deleted once the incident came to light.
The Teachers' Association imposed expulsions of three and five days respectively on the students who created the material. Today, the other students at the school proceeded to occupy the premises, demanding stricter penalties for those responsible for the digital attack. Simultaneously, they issued a statement of solidarity with the five victimised schoolgirls.
Immediate mobilisation of the Regional Education Directorate
The immediate mobilisation of the competent authorities was confirmed by the Regional Education Director of Central Macedonia, Alexandros Koptsis. He stated that the incident is a cause for concern and highlights the need to protect children both in the physical and digital space.
Koptsis noted that from the moment the incident became known, educational and administrative mechanisms were mobilised in cooperation with the school's management, with the aim of addressing the matter with responsibility and discretion, whilst respecting the personal dignity of the students involved.
The Regional Education Directorate provided guidance for the immediate investigation of the incident and the protection of children. A psychologist is to visit the school to provide support to the students.
Exclusive authority for penalties rests with the Teachers' Association
The regional director emphasised that the protection of dignity, personal rights and the rights of every student is a non-negotiable priority. However, he clarified that the authority to impose penalties rests exclusively with the Teachers' Association and not with the regional administration.
He made particular mention of the initiative taken by students to issue a statement of solidarity with their five classmates.
