Trial of Mourzoukou in Patras: Accused of three infant murders

Trial for three infant murders begins in Patras

The 25-year-old Irini Mourzoukou was brought before the Mixed Jury Court of Patras from Wednesday, 4 November to stand trial for three infant murders. According to Ethnos, the charges relate to the death of two of her own children and an infant belonging to a friend of hers — acts which, it is reported, the accused has already confessed to.

Mourzoukou has been held in Elaionia prison since last September, following her transfer from Korydallos prison.

The committal order

A committal order has been issued in the case by the Misdemeanour Council of Achaia, which adopted in full the public prosecutor's proposal. According to the case file evidence, the cases extend chronologically from 2020 onwards.

At the centre of the trial are the deaths of the three infants. The judicial proceedings are expected to examine the evidentiary material and the conclusions of the prosecutor's assessment.

What the prosecutorial proposal states

In the prosecutorial proposal, Mourzoukou is characterised as "an organised, particularly calculated, violent, relentless, unscrupulous and extremely dangerous person". The prosecutor states that the 25-year-old "enjoyed her victims, helpless in her hands, without any remorse".

At the same time, the defence claim regarding reduced criminal responsibility is rejected.

The order emphasises that the accused's behaviour does not indicate that she developed genuine emotional bonds with the people around her. According to the judicial authorities, the victims were not selected randomly: the 25-year-old is alleged to have systematically targeted defenceless infants and young children, seeking absolute domination and control. In the same context, the prosecutorial assessment speaks of "distorted self-aggrandisement".

Reference to the death of her sister

A separate section of the prosecutorial proposal is devoted to the death of the accused's younger sister, Zoi, in 2014. The prosecutor considers this the starting point of Mourzoukou's subsequent criminal conduct.

This particular act has been subject to statutory limitation and does not form part of the current trial. However, in the prosecutorial proposal it is characterised as a "harbinger" of the crimes that followed, with reference to the fact that the accused took her sister's life in "an insensitive manner" already from her teenage years.

The family environment

The prosecutorial assessment also refers to the family environment in which the 25-year-old grew up, describing it as problematic, with constant moves and marked instability. This factor is not put forward as mitigating.

On the contrary, it is presented as the context within which the accused developed manipulative behaviours and deception mechanisms from an early age — which, according to the prosecutorial assessment, she later exploited in her criminal conduct.
