Knife attack at Mandras Police Station — two charges filed, officer released
Charges have been filed against a 31-year-old Greek national for attempted murder with premeditation and in succession, disruption of the functioning of a public service, and violations of the weapons law, according to Dikastiko.gr. The man is being held under guard in the intensive care unit at Asklepeion Hospital in Voula.
Additionally, charges have been filed against the police officer who shot the 31-year-old, for violations of the weapons law. The prosecutor, by oral order, released him without detention.
Timeline of the incident
The attack took place in the afternoon of Friday at the Mandras-Eidyllia Police Station in Western Attica. The 31-year-old entered the building armed with a knife and threatened police officers on duty.
According to initial information, the man turned on the station commander and the duty officer. Despite repeated and clear orders to drop the knife and comply, the 31-year-old refused and moved threateningly towards the officers.
Use of service weapon and injury
During the incident, one police officer used his service weapon, firing once. The 31-year-old was wounded in the abdominal area. An ambulance from the National Emergency Medical Service (EKAB) was called immediately, and the wounded man was initially transported to Thriasio Hospital.
During the violent incident, one of the two police officers who were attacked was also wounded.
Greek Police announcement
The Greek Police issued an official statement on the incident:
"In the afternoon today, a 31-year-old Greek national went to the Mandras-Eidyllia Police Station, having a knife in his possession, with which he threatened police officers who were inside the building. Despite repeated and clear orders from the officers to drop the knife and comply with their instructions, the man did not respond and moved threateningly towards them. During the incident, one of the officers used his service weapon, firing once, resulting in the man being wounded in the abdominal area. An ambulance from EKAB was called immediately to the scene, and the wounded man was transported to hospital. A preliminary investigation is being conducted into the incident, and all circumstances under which it occurred are being investigated."
Preliminary investigation underway
Competent authorities are conducting a preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The 31-year-old remains under medical supervision in the intensive care unit at Asklepeion Hospital in Voula, with security guard presence.
