Five cases of fraud and theft targeting elderly people in various areas of Western Greece have been recorded by skai.gr, with victims losing tens of thousands of euros in total in cash, jewellery and valuables.
Elis: €65,000 in a small bag in a square
An elderly man in Elis fell victim to a telephone scam on Friday afternoon. An unknown caller contacted him, posing as an accountant, and persuaded him that he needed to hand over money to avoid a fine from the tax authorities. The man placed €65,000 in a small bag and left it in a square near a church, following the perpetrator's instructions. A short time later, a vehicle stopped at the location and a man collected the bag. The case is being investigated by the police.
Aigialia: Fake DEDDIE employee extracts €21,000 and jewellery
An elderly woman in Aigialia received an unknown man at her home who presented himself as a DEDDIE employee. Using the method of distraction, the perpetrator removed €12,000 in cash, as well as jewellery and valuables worth approximately €9,000. In the same area, another elderly woman lost cash just over €500, $1,000 and jewellery worth approximately €10,000, following a telephone call from an unknown caller who presented himself as an accountant claiming she owed money to the tax authorities. Both cases are under police investigation.
Aetolia-Acarnania: Promise of return of investment funds
An elderly man in Aetolia-Acarnania received a telephone call from an unknown woman, who persuaded him that he was entitled to a refund of money from investment activity. The perpetrator managed to extract a total of €14,000. The case is being investigated by the competent authorities.
Patras: Bag with cash and gold jewellery left on the pavement
A woman in Patras received a telephone call from an unknown person who presented himself as a DEDDIE employee. Following his instructions, she collected cash and gold jewellery in a bag and left it on the pavement. An unknown person passed shortly after and collected it. The woman is reported to have lost approximately €9,000 and jewellery. A report was filed with the police and the investigation is ongoing.
