Police authorities have arrested a 70-year-old man who is alleged to have caused a fire at a production facility in the Kalochori area of Thessaloniki. According to the conclusions of an investigation conducted by the Fire Service, the cause of the fire was the use of an open flame on paper, with the aim of removing wasps from the premises.

The arrested man was brought before the authorities through a flagrante delicto procedure, facing the charge of arson by negligence. Additionally, an administrative fine of €5,886.56 was imposed against him for violation of applicable regulations.

The incident occurred in the afternoon, resulting in the activation of the emergency number 112 at 16:13. A message sent to residents warned of dense smoke and advised them to remain in closed indoor spaces, with building openings sealed.

A total of 23 firefighters took part in the fire extinguishing operation with nine vehicles, whilst a helicopter provided aerial support. The effort also involved equipment from the municipal mechanism Delta as well as water tankers of the Regional Authority of Central Macedonia.
