Telephone scams in Crete: 81-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy each lose €5,000
Two new cases of telephone fraud have been recorded in Chania and Heraklion, with losses of €5,000 in each instance. The perpetrators are being sought.
Two new victims of telephone fraud in Chania and Heraklion
Two new cases of telephone fraud have been added to the growing wave of scams in Crete, according to ERT. In each case, the victims handed over valuable items to unknown individuals following instructions they received by telephone.
In Plataneia, Chania, unknown perpetrators convinced an 81-year-old woman that there was a fault in her home's electrical installation. The elderly woman left a bag outside her house containing €5,000 in cash and various documents.
A similar method was used in Heraklion, where a 15-year-old boy became a victim. The perpetrators instructed him to place jewellery and €5,000 in cash in a bag, which he left at the location they specified.
In both cases, the authorities are seeking those responsible. ERT notes that such scams have now become an everyday occurrence across Greece.
