Attack on two Slovenes in central Poreč, investigators identify identity of multiple suspects
Two young Slovenian citizens sustained bodily injuries in a physical assault that occurred on Saturday at around three o'clock in the morning on Narodni trg in Poreč. The older victim is nineteen years old, whilst the other is a minor.
According to a police report, the victims stated that they were attacked by multiple persons without prior acquaintance. The incident occurred in the heart of the city, on one of the main town squares.
Officers of the Istrian police confirmed that they are actively conducting a criminal investigation. The collection of all relevant information regarding how the conflict unfolded and what role individual persons present at the scene had is underway.
Croatian media report that investigators have already managed to identify the identity of several persons for whom there is reasonable suspicion that they participated in breaching public order and peace. The search for remaining persons who could be involved is still continuing.
So far it is not known what triggered the entire chain of events, nor whether the victims and attackers had any contact before the conflict.
The incident occurred not far from an area where there are a number of catering establishments with night-time operations. It recalls a similar case from last year when a nineteen-year-old Slovenian citizen was also seriously injured in a brawl. In that case, suspicion fell on the security staff of a local club, which attracted considerable media attention in both countries. An official has not confirmed a link between the two cases.
More detailed information about the circumstances of this incident will be known after the official conclusion of the investigation.
