A fatal maritime collision occurred on the Adriatic between the islands of Šolta and Brač on Sunday. Four people died in the collision between a catamaran and a sailing vessel, and Croatian authorities have now made their first arrest in connection with the incident, according to Index.hr.
The French-registered sailing vessel, 14 metres long, was carrying eight Czech tourists. After being struck by the catamaran, the vessel sank. Three victims were found shortly after the incident, whilst the fourth body was discovered later that same day at a depth of approximately 50 metres, inside the sunken cabin.
Four people who survived were transferred to hospital in Split for treatment. There were 118 passengers and seven crew members aboard the vessel that struck the sailing vessel, and none of them were injured.
Police have now detained a 33-year-old Croatian citizen, the first officer on the catamaran. According to reports in the newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija, an investigation is being conducted against him for allegedly endangering maritime traffic safety. If the charges are confirmed, he faces a prison sentence of three to 15 years, as the breaches allegedly resulted in the deaths of multiple people.
