From ice cream to car breaking: cameras document Esztergom man's series of vandalism
On the evening of 31 October, a 40-year-old man appeared at a petrol station in Esztergom, where he stole ice cream, beer and charcoal briquettes, according to police.hu. He pushed a freezer box standing in the entrance to the waste storage area, then took all the ice cream from it. He then took several cartons of beer and several packages of charcoal briquettes with him.
He poured the beers out at the scene and attempted to start a fire with the charcoal. He smashed the right front window of a parked Chevrolet Spark, opened the car, then damaged the plastic parts beneath the ignition switch and twisted the wires together in an attempt to start the vehicle. The attempt was unsuccessful. He packed the stolen goods into the back seat of the car, broke the rear windscreen wiper and damaged the bodywork elements of the right front door. By the time the petrol station workers began their shift, the man had already left the scene.
Investigators showed the camera footage to the security guard of a nearby shop. The guard recognised the man: he said he had seen him the previous day next to a car, which later turned out to be stolen. On the basis of this information, the suspected perpetrator was identified: N. M., aged 40, who is also accused of multiple property crimes committed in the Budaörs jurisdiction area.
It also emerged that on 1 November, the man broke into an Esztergom car dealership. He got into several vehicles, searched through them, caused damage, deliberately overturned a scooter and knocked over a concrete wall support element.
As a result of coordinated work by Esztergom law enforcement and criminal investigation units, the man was arrested and taken into custody in the car park of another shopping centre that same afternoon. N. M. is being prosecuted for vandalism, theft and attempted unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.
