A 38-year-old man has been charged by the State Police in Foligno with stealing a car from a rehabilitation facility in Spoleto.
The theft was carried out a few hours before. The victim, a resident of the community, had noticed with a delay that the keys had gone missing from his room. This circumstance had facilitated the thief's action, as he had not needed to force any mechanism to take the vehicle.
The victim identified to investigators a former acquaintance as the person responsible: the suspect had presented himself at the facility shortly before the theft with a pretext, then took advantage of the victim's absence.
The Foligno police officers, alerted by their colleagues in Spoleto and having identified the possible perpetrator, began to search the area. The vehicle was located in the historic centre of Foligno, with the 38-year-old nearby.
When stopped, the man — with a criminal record for crimes against property and driving under the influence — confessed to the crime. He was then taken to the police station and charged with aggravated theft.
It should be noted that the accused must be considered innocent until a final conviction is reached.
