Murder by medication: arrest after two years

A 35-year-old nurse, Nadir Rossi, has been arrested in Verona for the murder of his wife Jessica Dalla Chiara, a 32-year-old who died on 24 June 2024. According to today.it, investigators from the mobile squad reconstructed a criminal plan lasting weeks, in which the man allegedly administered non-therapeutic insulin to his wife through injections and intravenous infusions.

The investigation arose from two separate reports. The integrated university hospital company of Verona communicated, following the autopsy, that the numerous episodes of hypoglycaemia that had affected the victim were not natural but caused by external insulin injections. In parallel, the woman's parents had expressed suspicions about the causes of death and the haste with which their son-in-law had arranged the cremation of the body.

The plan: three documented attempts

Investigators identified at least three episodes of insulin administration. A first attempt dated back to the night of 22 May before her death, when Jessica suffered a cardiac circulatory arrest at home, placed in a pharmacological coma and in imminent danger of death. She was saved only by the timely intervention of emergency services. During the subsequent hospital stay, Rossi allegedly administered additional lethal doses through the venous catheters to which his wife was connected, causing three further hypoglycaemic crises. Three days after discharge, the final injection at home proved fatal.

Premeditation emerges from online searches

Crucial elements of the prosecution's reconstruction emerge from the browser history of the 35-year-old's smartphone. Starting from April 2024, several weeks before Jessica showed her first symptoms of illness, Rossi had carried out targeted searches on the symptoms of severe hypoglycaemia, on the differential diagnosis of hyperinsulinism and on toxicological methods for detecting insulin overdose. In the days following his wife's death, he viewed a specialised essay on forensic medicine focused precisely on murders committed by healthcare personnel using hypoglycaemic medication.

Obstacles to the investigation and financial benefits

Immediately after Jessica's death, Rossi allegedly induced the civil registrar of Bussolengo into error, proceeding with the cremation of the body to prevent further autopsy examinations. Furthermore, according to local newspapers, the man allegedly received compensation for his wife's death, as she had taken out a life insurance policy two years earlier. The custodial precautionary order in prison was requested by the Verona prosecutor's office and executed on 29 October by the mobile squad.

Other offences charged

The suspect has been charged with offences of aggravated attempted murder, destruction and suppression of a corpse through fraudulent cremation, insurance fraud and continued embezzlement of medication. Rossi had been dismissed last year following an internal disciplinary procedure, not in relation to the murder investigation, and had never challenged his dismissal before the labour tribunal.

Words of a grieving husband

When questioned a few days after his wife's death, Rossi presented himself as a man devastated by grief, describing Jessica as his "only and great love" since their school days. He recounted how, shortly before she died, she had told him she felt tired and wanted to "just sleep". He then recalled how, during one of the crises, Jessica had written her memoirs to him, with their daughter Aurora indicated as his first desire. Those words, at the time interpreted as the emotional testament of a man in mourning, may now assume a completely different meaning in light of the charges.
