Arrested for fake carabiniere fraud

According to rainews.it, carabinieri stopped a young man in flagrante delicto in Mattarello on suspicion of aggravated fraud in concert with accomplices, burglary and unlawful possession of a weapon. The man had presented himself at the home of an elderly married couple, identifying himself as a carabiniere after accomplices had contacted them by telephone.

Under the pretence of checking cash and valuables to rule out illicit provenance, the young man obtained 380 euros in cash, jewellery and a legally held pistol. Members of the Arma blocked him whilst still in possession of the stolen goods, which were immediately returned to the rightful owners.

The arrest is part of a series of similar episodes reported in Trentino, where the "fake carabiniere" fraud continues to target vulnerable persons.
