Genoa, arrest for misuse of credit card and backpack theft

Police operation at shopping centre

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, officers from the Cornigliano Police Station Commissariat arrested a 35-year-old Algerian man and reported a 40-year-old Moroccan man in an operation concerning the theft of a backpack and the misuse of a credit card. The first intervention occurred in the early afternoon, when the patrol car received notification of the backpack theft perpetrated a few hours earlier inside a shopping centre.

The victim reported that a credit card taken from the backpack had been used for purchases totalling 130 euros, the last one at a tobacconist's shop on Via Carlo Rolando around 16:00. Officers proceeded immediately to the location and, waiting outside the shop, stopped the man who had just made the payment.

Video surveillance and recovery of the backpack

Images recorded by the video surveillance systems of the tobacconist's shop and the shopping centre confirmed both the theft of the backpack and the misuse of the credit card. Subsequently, in the course of further investigations, officers from the Commissariat conducted an intervention at a lodging facility in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where they found the 40-year-old Moroccan man in possession of the stolen backpack and other personal effects belonging to the victim, including three mobile phones and a health insurance card, also stemming from thefts.

The legitimate owners of the objects were traced and the stolen property will be returned to them. The Algerian man will be tried with immediate judgment procedures on the same day, whilst the Moroccan man has been reported for receiving stolen goods. The presumption of innocence remains in force until final judgment.
