The tribunal of Reggio Calabria has issued the first sentences in the mega-trial against 'Ndrangheta: 76 defendants convicted for a total of 1,098 years of imprisonment and €440,000 in fines.

The tribunal of Reggio Calabria has issued the first judicial decisions in the mega-trial against 'Ndrangheta. The judges convicted 76 defendants, who had opted for the abbreviated procedure, to a total of 1,098 years of imprisonment and fines of €440,000.
The convicted individuals were found guilty of being part of a mafia-type criminal association and of participating in an organisation engaged in international drug trafficking. According to information released by Eurojust, the Calabrian families involved operated mainly from San Luca and controlled a significant share of cocaine trade in Europe.
The investigation was launched following a transnational operation conducted in 2023 with the cooperation of authorities from Belgium, Germany, Portugal, France, Spain, Romania, Slovenia, Brazil and Panama. Eurojust and Europol coordinated the exchange of information, joint investigation groups and operational support.
Investigators had to contend with the use of encrypted messaging services such as EncroChat and Sky ECC by the suspects. On 3 May 2023, over 2,700 officers executed simultaneous raids, seizing several companies and arresting 132 members of the criminal network.
The 'Ndrangheta families dealt not only in the distribution of narcotic substances, but also in the systematic laundering of illicit proceeds.
