Rome's Court of Assizes of Appeal has upheld the life sentence for Gabriele Bianchi, the sole person convicted of the murder of Willy Monteiro Duarte. The sentence was issued on 9 June, concluding the third degree of trial for the young man from Paliano.
Bianchi, who was held at Rebibbia, was found guilty of killing the 21-year-old Cape Verdean on the night of 6 September 2020 in Colleferro. The boy had been beaten to death after intervening to defend a friend during a brawl. The other four defendants were acquitted on appeal.
During the hearing, the court president read a passage from the ruling emphasising how Bianchi acted with "particular cruelty". The judges established that the young man, despite being aware of the victim's health conditions, continued striking him repeatedly.
The sentence was accompanied by a series of ancillary penalties, including perpetual prohibition from holding public office and suspension of his driving licence. The obligation to pay compensation to the civil parties was also upheld.
The Prison Administration Department subsequently issued a statement defining Bianchi as a "dangerous and bullying detainee". The department clarified that the conduct shown by the convicted man during his detention confirms the profile of dangerousness that emerged during the trial.
The sentence is final and cannot be appealed further. Lawyers for the family of Willy Monteiro Duarte expressed satisfaction with the verdict, emphasising that justice had been served for the young man killed whilst attempting to protect a friend.
