Rome's Police Headquarters has intensified efforts against fraud targeting tourists in the heart of the capital. The latest operation has resulted in one arrest, 16 charges and administrative measures against those operating in the sector.

The capital's law enforcement have carried out an operation against those defrauding visitors in the most frequented zones of the centre. The outcome is one person taken into custody, 16 reported to the judicial authorities, one European Union citizen removed from the national territory and a non-EU national set for expulsion with detention at the Ponte Galeria reception centre.
The fraud in question involves approaching passersby under the pretext of a bet or sleight-of-hand game, then obtaining money through deception. This illicit activity finds fertile ground in areas with the highest tourist traffic.
The intervention is based on a method that combines territorial monitoring with analysis of individual cases. Officers from the First Trevi Campo Marzio District continually patrol the most exposed zones, whilst designated offices examine the records and administrative status of reported individuals.
This system allows action on multiple fronts. Alongside criminal penalties, in suitable cases administrative measures are applied that restrict the ability to remain in the territory for those who have committed repeated offences.
Over the past two weeks, in addition to criminal measures, a removal order was issued for a EU citizen and a deportation decree with related detention at the reception centre for another individual. The objective remains to strike at the entire criminal chain, from street conduct to the conditions that enable its repetition.
