Armed man shot dead by Aras officers in Anykščiai district after threatening family members
On Sunday evening in Anykščiai district, in Sviesteliškis village, a dangerous incident occurred. A man in possession of an unlicensed firearm threatened family members who were in a yard. Frightened relatives called the police.
Officers from the Antiterrorism Operations Unit Aras, under the Police Department at the Ministry of the Interior, arrived at the scene. The situation became critical when the man pointed his weapon at the special forces. At that point, officers opened fire and shot the man dead.
Police representatives later explained that the deceased had previously been known for aggressive behaviour. He frequently came into conflict with those around him and would harass neighbours. These facts suggest that the incident may have been connected to previously observed psychological or behavioural problems on the man's part.
The incident is being investigated by a pre-trial investigation. During the investigation, all circumstances will be clarified, including whether officers used force in accordance with legal requirements.
