On Sunday evening, at approximately 18:24, officers of the police special operations unit in Sviesteliškis village, Anykščiai district, used service weapons and neutralised an armed individual who had threatened his relatives and fired at arriving law enforcement representatives.
The incident began when relatives called police about a man born in 1951 who was threatening them in a yard with an illegally held firearm. When local police officers arrived, the aggressive individual refused to comply with lawful demands to put down the weapon and leave the property. Negotiations continued for approximately an hour and a half, during which officers repeatedly urged the man to surrender over a loudspeaker.
While waiting for special forces to arrive, the aggressor fired shots twice in an unclear direction. When the operational group officers arrived, the man pointed a weapon resembling a hunting rifle at them and fired. The special forces officers were unharmed, but they returned fire and neutralised the threat. The individual died at the scene.
Renatas Vitkauskas, head of the Utena district police, explained to journalists on Monday that this man had previously caused similar incidents. Law enforcement had responded to his address more than once due to aggressive behaviour, possibly connected with mental health problems. A weapon had previously been confiscated from the man.
Ramūnas Pačebutas, a representative of the Panevėžys district prosecutor's office, confirmed that the officers involved in the incident have not been suspended from duty. They are being provided with necessary psychological support. A pre-trial investigation has been initiated regarding the illegal possession of a firearm and resistance to state officials.
