Man hiding in Užupis, accused of assaulting woman, becomes focus of police investigation
Residents of Vilnius's Užupis district have been actively sharing warnings on social media in recent days about a man who, according to reports, behaves aggressively towards passers-by. People are warning each other to be cautious of this person and circulating his images.
According to local community members, the man attacked women in the capital's Užupis area several days ago. Despite this, he was spotted walking around the city on Monday. It is reported that he carries items that could pose a danger to those around him.
Representatives of Vilnius district police confirmed to the LRT.lt portal that they received a report about this person. At the scene of the incident, it was established that the man struck a woman in the face in a shop. A pre-trial investigation has been launched into this episode under a Criminal Code article concerning minor health impairment.
For such an offence, the law provides for restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment of up to three years.
Ramūnas Matonis, head of the Police Department's Communications Division, responding to public concern, explained that law enforcement is investigating the situation. According to him, various preventative measures can be applied to suspects, while detention is ordered only in exceptional cases when there are necessary grounds.
The police statement also notes that officers do not comment on the suspect's state of health, which, according to residents, is a cause for concern. This same person has already attracted police attention this year for a breach of public order.
