Man attacking people in Užupis becomes headache for Vilnius residents: pre-trial investigation launched
Residents of Vilnius's Užupis district are warning each other on social media about a man who allegedly attacks passers-by. His photographs, name and surname are being circulated online, with people advised to avoid him.
According to the police department, the man struck a woman in the face in a shop. Following this incident, Vilnius District Police Headquarters has launched a pre-trial investigation under the Criminal Code article on minor bodily injury. This offence carries penalties of restricted liberty, arrest, or imprisonment for up to three years.
According to residents, the man attacked women in Užupis a few days ago, but on Monday was still walking free. He is said to be carrying dangerous objects.
Whether the suspect has been detained, the police have not yet disclosed. Ramūnas Matonis, head of the Police Department's Communications Division, explained that suspects may be subject to various preventive measures, and arrest is applied only in exceptional cases where there are necessary grounds for it.
Police representatives refused to comment on the suspect's health condition, which has raised residents' concerns. This year, police have already been called out regarding this person for a public order offence.
