In Vilnius's Užupis district, residents are sharing warnings on social media about a man walking in the city who, according to reports, attacked women several days prior. On Monday he was spotted walking in the city. It is claimed that he carries dangerous items, and photographs and personal details of him have been circulated.
The Vilnius Regional Police Headquarters confirmed it had received a report about this person. According to police officers, the man struck a woman in the face in a shop. A criminal investigation has been opened into this incident under the Criminal Code article concerning minor injury to health. The law provides for this offence a prison sentence, arrest, or deprivation of liberty for up to three years.
Ramūnas Matonis, head of the Police Department's Communications Division, commented on the situation following public outcry. He explained that police are investigating the circumstances. "Suspects may be subjected to various measures of restraint. The strictest measure of restraint, arrest, is applied only in exceptional cases when there are necessary grounds for it," he stated.
Police representatives did not disclose whether the man has been detained. Nor have officials provided comments concerning the suspect's state of health, about which residents are concerned. Earlier this year police were already called to him for a public order offence.
