Indian national driving without licence causes tragic collision with bus in Dobele; case referred to prosecution
State Police have completed their investigation into a criminal case involving an Indian national who drove without a valid licence, using a forged document, and caused a serious traffic accident in Dobele district. The bus driver had both legs amputated.
Unlicensed driver from India causes serious crash with bus; materials sent to prosecution
On 18 February at approximately 18.50, a serious traffic accident occurred in Jaunbērze parish, Dobele district. A Volvo cargo truck driver, whilst driving on the Riga–Liepāja highway, entered a junction without respecting a stop sign and collided with a VDL public transport bus.
The bus, which was carrying passengers, was being driven by a man born in 1973, travelling from Riga to Liepāja. He had right of way at the junction. At the moment of impact, the bus driver realised that the collision could not be avoided, as there were other vehicles in the opposite lane. He remained in his driving lane to prevent harm to the passengers' lives.
The accident injured the bus driver and five passengers. The bus driver underwent leg amputation by paramedics. One passenger sustained facial bone fractures and other injuries. A woman driving behind the cargo truck rushed to help the injured driver by contacting the emergency services.
Investigators established that the Volvo was being driven by an Indian national born in 1990. The man had no valid driving licence. At the scene, he showed police officers a forged document from the United Arab Emirates, which purportedly authorised him to drive heavy vehicles. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system.
The State Police Zemgale region department has concluded the investigation. Criminal proceedings have been initiated for traffic regulation violations resulting in serious consequences and for document forgery. The law provides for imprisonment of up to eight years for these offences. The suspect was held in custody during the investigation.
