Seven-year sentence for RNI official in Tangier
Ahmed Zegaf has been handed down a seven-year prison sentence by Tangier courts, according to the Hespress website (https://en.hespress.com/147843-moroccan-court-sentences-rni-politician-to-seven-years-in-prison-over-property-fraud.html). A local figure in the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and vice-president of the Mghogha district, he was tried this Friday for land fraud offences.
The judges of the criminal chamber of the court of appeal handed down this sentence in the first instance. The trial highlighted suspicions of forgery in administrative certificates, alteration of official documents and the use of terminated agreements to illegally take possession of land parcels.
Fifteen months elapsed between his detention and this judgment. State services had opened files on some twenty cases related to property, in which clandestine subdivisions and abusive occupations of private properties appeared. Among the charges, a client claimed that land sold to him by Zegaf was subsequently sold to a third party.
This dispute reportedly led investigators to examine other property transactions involving this politician. Furthermore, he had previously received a three-year prison sentence in an earlier trial for irregularities in the property sector.
