Norwegian police conducted an international operation in early June in which 28 men were arrested in seven countries. The men are suspected of having purchased access to forums on the dark web that contained child sexual abuse material.
Norway's national crime investigation unit, Kripos, stated on Wednesday that the arrested individuals used the cryptocurrency Monero to pay for access to multiple platforms on the dark web.
"We have worked closely with six countries to coordinate the arrests of identified users who paid with cryptocurrency to gain access to the forums," stated police attorney Terge Nedrebo Michelsen in a press release, according to Euronews.
The men, aged 22 to 54, were arrested in Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Czechia, Poland and Germany. Kripos stated that further arrests are possible, possibly also in other countries, and that there are "many suspects".
Kripos developed a method in 2025 to track the use of cryptocurrency in specific cases.
In a separate statement, Europol stated that one of the arrested individuals "made extensive use of artificial intelligence to produce illegal material", and that "certain victims belonged to the close family circle of another suspect".
Three children were "placed under protection" as a result of the operation, according to Kripos. The operation also resulted in "the seizure of more than 460 items, including electronic devices, digital wallets, narcotics and large quantities of performance-enhancing substances", stated Europol.
