A former prominent member of society from the Vestland region has admitted criminal liability for driving whilst impaired. This was disclosed by police prosecutor Olav Otterdal to Nettavisen on Friday, according to sognavis.no.

The man was charged following a crash in Vestland county on Monday, 7 September. He drove off the road and ended up in a ditch, and the vehicle sustained considerable material damage. Police assessed at the scene that the man appeared impaired, and a breath test was positive. He was alone in the vehicle and had his driving licence revoked on the spot. He was subsequently transported to Haukeland University Hospital for a blood sample.

The interrogation has not yet been formally concluded, however, as it has not been read through, read aloud and approved by the accused. The man has thus verbally admitted to the conduct, but the written part of the interrogation still lacks his approval.

Otterdal confirms that the man has been made aware of the blood test results, but declines to disclose the blood alcohol level.

Nettavisen attempted to reach the accused without success. He has no appointed defence counsel.

It has not yet been clarified how the criminal case will proceed. Once the interrogation is formally concluded, police will assess whether the case can be resolved by a statement of guilt, or whether charges will be brought and an ordinary trial conducted.

The case was first reported by Dagbladet on 8 September.
