Oslo police have arrested and remanded in custody four Romanian nationals suspected of a spate of gold jewellery thefts targeting elderly people.

On Wednesday morning, police in the Norwegian capital arrested four people who are now remanded in custody for four weeks. They are suspected of being behind a marked increase in thefts in which elderly citizens are distracted and robbed of their gold jewellery on the open street.
The arrested individuals – two women and two men in their 40s – all hold Romanian citizenship. This is stated by Oslo Police District in a press release, which Avisa Oslo reports.
Over the past two weeks, police have received 15 reports of similar thefts in public spaces. The crime scenes typically lie in the vicinity of shopping centres, shops or pedestrian streets.
According to police, the criminals often operate in groups with varying compositions of women and men, and they frequently make use of foreign-registered vehicles.
Police prosecutor Yngvild Tessem Jystad particularly warns elderly people against engaging in conversation with strangers who offer to sell jewellery or mobile phones on the street.
