In a coordinated international operation, police in 59 countries have arrested 1,024 people suspected of human trafficking. The operation was carried out simultaneously across multiple continents and represents one of the largest transnational crackdowns on this form of organised crime in several years.
According to Stavanger Aftenblad, Norwegian police actively contributed to the global operation. At the national level, the operation led to the uncovering of four separate pimping cases in the country.
Human trafficking is classified as a serious form of organised crime in which perpetrators exploit vulnerable individuals, often for prostitution or forced labour. International cooperation is considered crucial to combating the networks behind this type of crime, as operators in many cases cross international borders.
It is not yet known how many of those arrested will be charged, or what specific sentences they may face. Police investigations are ongoing in several of the affected countries.
