Oslo District Court has handed down a sentence against Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. The court sentenced him to four years in prison for two cases of rape and several other criminal acts.

Høiby was found guilty of two rapes but acquitted of two similar charges. The verdict marks one of the most serious crises the Norwegian royal house has faced in recent times.

Although Høiby is not formally a member of the royal house and holds no title or official duties, he grew up at its centre. This proximity to the throne made his fall into a public scandal that extended beyond one family's boundaries and became a blow to the monarchy as a whole.

The case has long been the subject of public debate and has raised questions about privileges and boundaries that proved to be easily crossed.
