Crown Princess's Son Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence
A judge in the capital has sentenced Marius Borg Høiby, son of the country's crown princess, to four years in prison without parole.
The prosecution had requested almost eight years in prison if all charges were upheld. The defence counsel, for their part, believed the client should be acquitted on the most serious counts and instead receive a sentence of eighteen months.
The 29-year-old was found guilty of subjecting his former girlfriend to domestic violence. The court also established that he had committed two sexual assaults in the form of rape through sexual acts other than intercourse. One of these assaults occurred at the royal family's official residence at Skaugum in 2018.
Four other charges in the indictment, including two rape allegations, resulted in acquittal. The defendant has consistently denied the serious allegations, but has admitted to breaching a restraining order and transporting a large quantity of cannabis.
On Monday morning, the judgment was read out in a room full of journalists. Høiby himself followed the proceedings from custody via screen. He was not physically present for health reasons, according to his legal representatives.
The judge ordered him to pay a total of 640,000 kroner in compensation and damages to the affected women. His former girlfriend is to receive 100,000 kroner.
It remains uncertain whether the sentence will be appealed. The defence counsel requested immediate release from remand custody during the court hearing, but this was handled behind closed doors.
