Emergency services were called after a strong smell of fuel was reported at the church. When police and firefighters arrived, they found flames on the outside of the building. The fire was extinguished quickly, and the building's structure did not catch fire.
According to police operations chief Anders Aas, cited by Adresseavisen, it was staff inside the church who first became aware of the situation. They noticed the strong smell and alerted the authorities. The church was open to visitors when this occurred.
At the scene, police dealt with two people. One was released shortly after, as it turned out they had nothing to do with the case. The other, the woman who is now charged, was taken away.
Operations chief Ine Jahren told Dagen that the incident could have had serious consequences. Police discovered fuel at several points around the façade. Investigators cordoned off parts of the area around the church to carry out investigations. The arrested woman is likely to receive follow-up care from the health services.
