Arrest in murder case in Stavanger: man charged with murder of 40-year-old
On Saturday morning, police arrested a man in his 30s and charged him with the murder of Christian Rydningen Auklend (40), according to rastavanger.no. Auklend was found dead on Thursday in a municipal dwelling on Våland in Stavanger by municipal staff.
The arrest took place at the suspect's own residence in the early morning hours and proceeded peacefully and without incident, according to police. The suspect was subsequently taken to the police station.
Police prosecutor Ellen Mellemstrand Gimre confirms that police have sufficient grounds for suspicion, but emphasises that the investigation is still at an early stage.
"We are now working to verify key information. The suspect has not yet been questioned, but this will be arranged in the course of the day," says Gimre.
Police initially want to clarify how the man responds to the charge and obtain his account of the sequence of events. Police will not initially disclose whether there is a relationship between the deceased and the suspect.
The case has high priority and substantial resources are being committed. South-West police district is also receiving external assistance.
"We are receiving assistance from Kripos with the investigation management," says Gimre.
Work is now proceeding broadly with witness interviews, forensic examinations and review of video surveillance. Police have already made several seizures in the case, but the police prosecutor does not wish to comment at this stage on whether police have control over a potential murder weapon.
The last known, confirmed observation of the deceased took place on Friday 29 May at 20:00 at Coop Extra on Paradis in Stavanger. Police are particularly interested in his movements and any observations made after this time point, and continue to urge witnesses to come forward.
The suspect is represented by lawyer Odd Rune Torstrup, who has no comments at this stage. The deceased's next of kin have been notified of the arrest.
