A man in his 30s has been remanded in custody for four weeks following the death of a man in his 60s from burn injuries in Herre in Bamble municipality, according to aftenposten.no.
In the early hours of Thursday, police received a report that a person had been set on fire at an address in Herre. The victim was transported to Haukeland Hospital in Bergen with severe burn injuries and died later the same day.
The man in his 30s was charged with attempted murder on Thursday. On Friday, the charge was upgraded to murder.
Police prosecutor Tine Henriksen confirmed to Aftenposten that there was a relationship between the accused and the deceased, but declined to elaborate on what kind of connection they had or what precipitated the incident.
"We have significant work ahead of us in a serious case," Henriksen said.
One other person was present when the incident occurred. This person has the status of witness in the case. Police have also seized several mobile phones.
"The accused man was questioned Thursday evening, and questioning will continue Friday morning," Henriksen said.
Following a detention hearing in Nedre Telemark District Court on Friday 15 May, the man was remanded in custody for four weeks. The detention is justified on grounds of risk of evidence tampering. The accused was additionally given restrictions on mail and visits, a media ban and two weeks of isolation throughout the entire period.
"In such a serious case, there is a genuine risk that the accused could influence witnesses and tamper with evidence," Henriksen told NTB on Friday.
The accused was not present at the detention hearing. Police will continue with questioning of the accused and witnesses in the case.
