A man who runs a business in central Trondheim was arrested this week at his residence after police made a significant drugs discovery in a locked storage unit in the cellar.
According to the court's decision, the arrest was carried out overnight into Thursday. The man has now been remanded in custody for four weeks, with the first two weeks subject to complete isolation with no access to letters or visits, reports Trondheim24.
Investigators believe the suspect had access to the storage unit and a safe where the illegal substance was hidden. When police searched his flat, they found keys that fitted these storage locations.
The arrested man's defence counsel argued that another resident in the same flat may have been responsible for the drugs. However, the District Court considered it most reasonable to assume that the suspect himself had control of the substance, whilst the court did not rule out that further persons may have been involved.
The investigation is still in its early stages. Police fear that if the man is released, he may destroy evidence or influence persons who are to provide statements. The remand in custody is intended to ensure that the investigation can continue without such risk.
The court emphasised that the case concerns a serious drugs offence which may result in several years' imprisonment. The man was absent when the decision was pronounced, but has the right to appeal the decision within fourteen days.
