Marius Borg Hoiby sentenced to four years in prison for two rapes
Marius Borg Hoiby, the 29-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was on Monday found guilty of two of four rape charges. The Oslo court sentenced him to four years unconditional imprisonment.
The trial began on 3 March and lasted seven weeks. Borg Hoiby faced a total of 39 charges, including four counts of rape, repeated violence against a former partner, traffic-related violence and drug possession.
Borg Hoiby was born from the crown princess's first relationship with a financier, and became part of the royal family when he was just under five years old. He is not in the line of succession to the throne, but nevertheless has a high profile as the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon.
The case has attracted considerable attention in Norway and internationally, with several hundred journalists present during the trial. According to Le Figaro, Borg Hoiby's excesses and allegations have dominated public discourse for several years.
