The son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Marius Borg Høiby, was on Monday, 15 June, sentenced to four years' imprisonment. The verdict covers two counts of rape, dealing in narcotic substances and assault in a close relationship.
The Norwegian Royal House declined to comment on the case when approached by NRK. "No comment" was the message from the Palace, at a time when many were expecting an official statement on the matter that has shaken the Norwegian monarchy.
The defence lawyers for the convicted man have requested that the sentence be served in home detention at the royal residence Skaugum, where Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit live. According to the lawyers, the location meets the requirements of the Prison and Probation Service for the use of electronic monitoring. Everyone living there is said to have consented to the arrangement.
The lawyers have also argued that the Crown Princess's state of health should be taken into consideration. She suffers from chronic lung disease. During the period in custody, Høiby requested on several occasions to be placed under monitoring instead of imprisonment, without success.
Ellen Holager Andenæs and Petar Sekulic, who represent the 28-year-old, state that he continues to maintain his innocence in relation to the rape charges. They do not rule out appealing the verdict. "It is natural to consider appealing the serious charges he was convicted of and which he has not admitted," the defence lawyers stated.
For now, the Royal House is maintaining distance from the case and emphasises that Marius Borg Høiby stands outside the monarchical institution.
