The 29-year-old Marius Borg Høiby will not be physically present at Oslo District Court when the verdict in the extensive criminal case against him is delivered on Monday morning. The court has decided that he will follow the verdict via video connection from Ila prison due to documented health reasons.
Communications adviser Markus Iestra from Oslo District Court informed TV 2 on Friday that the defendant will follow proceedings via video link when the verdict is delivered at 8.30. The verdict itself is expected to take between one and one and a half hours, and the judgment summary will be read aloud first.
Høiby's defence counsel, solicitor Ellen Holager Andenæs, confirms to the media that her client will not attend court due to health reasons. She adds that a staff member from the law firm will be present with Høiby in the prison, whilst the defence lawyers themselves will be seated in the courtroom during the verdict.
The case against Crown Princess Mette-Marit's son has lasted more than seven weeks over the winter period. He is charged with a total of 40 criminal offences, the most serious of which include rape whilst the victim was asleep against four women and assault in close relations against ex-girlfriend Nora Haukland. He is also charged with psychological and physical assault of former girlfriends.
During the trial, Høiby admitted parts of the charges but denied criminal responsibility for the most serious accusations. The prosecution has demanded a sentence of seven years and seven months' imprisonment. Over 70 witnesses were heard, and the case comprises approximately 830 pages of messages and more than 10,000 pages of evidence material.
