On Wednesday morning, Marius Borg Høiby is to appear in Oslo District Court again. The prosecution is demanding that he remains in remand, despite being sentenced to four years' imprisonment in mid-June.
Police prosecutor Oda Karterud believes the risk that the 29-year-old will commit new offences remains too high to release him. In a press statement, she made clear that it is not considered responsible to release him at present.
Høiby's defence counsel, Petar Sekulic, has responded with bewilderment. In a statement to news agency NTB, he said it is very difficult to understand the logic behind the request for continued detention.
Just days before the verdict was delivered, a higher court rejected an appeal for Høiby's release. The Court of Appeal also examined the possibility of him staying in the Crown Prince couple's home at Skaugum with an electronic ankle bracelet, but this was rejected. The judges feared he would seek out his former girlfriend from the Frogner district.
According to Karterud, the police are working to implement preventative measures that can reduce the risk of further criminal conduct. Once these measures begin to take effect, milder alternatives to the current remand could be considered.
The District Court has already imposed a two-year contact ban on Høiby with regard to the woman from Frogner, a decision he has not appealed. He has himself reiterated that his relationship with the woman is over for good.
The woman's legal representative, Mette Yvonne Larsen, has been notified of the prosecution's demand. She expressed to NTB that they value cooperation with the police, and reminded them that the contact ban remains in force.
